I agree that it takes more concentration to watch, and occasional pausing to read/think, so I don't watch SZS like I watch other shows (I usually like marathon watching). But I still like SZS b/c it's interesting and the art is good (and funny- the stalker episode- a chain of stalkers! and the email girl), it's just different than most other shows that are more "entertaining" with plot/suspense/romance. She does no more or no less as she only does what is required. Humans can kill themselves before her while she merely watches as saving humans are not part of her responsibilities. That's what annoyed me about SZS as well. Especially with subtitles, the screen was just too cluttered. Also, a lot of the jokes were quite literally lost in translation. The artword was a first for me as well. It just wasn't my style. I really only watched episodes here and there when it was on Anime on Demand, and only if I was bored with nothing else on, because I really couldn't get into it.
